Permission to play people

Members who have participated in Permission to Play have an opportunity to show their 12" quilts at Eugene Textile Center in October. Suzie Liles, the owner, is delighted to share our work. There is room to hang at least 20 pieces. If you'd like to share your work, please let Daisy know. You can bring 2 or 3 of your favorites to our next Guild meeting, Sept. 9th, or the sew night, Sept. 16th. The show will be hung on Oct. 1st. This is a great opportunity for our Guild to get some exposure with other fiber art communities. If you haven't participated before, there's still time to create something before the next Guild meeting. This month's theme is "Edges"; the last theme was "Heat".

This was our annual picnic at Friendly Park and we enjoyed a lovely evening with good company and food.

UPCOMING EVENTS:

Sew Night:  Wednesday, ​August 19 at McNail-Riley House at 6:30 pm

Sew Day:  Saturday, August 22 at Our Sewing Room from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm

“The Quilters”:  a wonderful play about pioneer women and quilting is currently being performed by Cottage Grove Theatre.​

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

Madyson announced that EMQG elections for 2016 are coming up soon.  All positions are open for election to any member who wants to run.  This year, our first entire year of being a full-fledged non-profit organization, we had 8 positions:  President, Secretary, Treasurer, Presenter (shared by two members), Blogger/Web/Photographer, Programs, Swap, BeeBlocks.  The board is proposing we consolidate down to 5 positions to spread the work more evenly.  Those would be:  President, Vice-President (to assist and cover for the President), Secretary/Web, Programs, Swap/Bee Blocks.  The treasurer and some of the blogging and web duties would be covered by the President and Vice-President. There is a potential for positions to be shared by two people. Please give serious consideration to running for one of these positions, especially if you have not already held a position!  All of the current position-holders will be helping the new people learn their roles after the elections, so there will be lots of help!  If you have questions about the positions, contact Madyson or the board (current position-holders).  Nominations will be held at next month’s meeting on September 9th with elections in October.

Coburg Quilt Show:  Madyson announced that we made $157 on our booth after expenses (vendor fee) and that any leftover items will be donated.

Madyson also gave a brief treasury report:  we have $5250 in the bank, but most of that is for the September retreat.  We still need to pay the remaining balance for the retreat which is approximately $4000.

Missy Downey mentioned she had been to some good quilt shops this summer in Marysville and Tumwater, WA.  Also, Linda Delaplain recommended the quilt shop in LaPine, OR.

PERMISSION TO PLAY:

This month was skipped, but Pat Johnston drew a theme for September: “Edges”.  Pat also said that the Permission to Play(12” by 12”) pieces were displayed at the winery meetup with the Corvallis Modern Quilt Guild in July and were well received.  She is returning the pieces to their owners at this meeting and future meetings, so please pick yours up from her.

PROGRAM:

Since this meeting was the picnic, there was not a program.  Pat announced some upcoming ideas for meeting programs:  The new Piece By Piece owner may be speaking about new quilting trends after Fall Quilt Market, a demonstration of the blog and web site using multiple laptop or tablet computers, Jessica Beaudet and perhaps others speaking on publishing patterns in magazines.

BEE:

Nelda Copsey used a handy tree trunk to display the Bee Blocks for August, which were for Kim Olsen and reflected the theme of “Water”.   Various-sized blocks in blues and greens with lots of curvy strips were fun to see.  Next month’s Bee Blocks are for Jennifer Fogerty-Gibson and are 18” chevron blocks made from 5” squares.

SWAP:

The swap for August was a favorite notion or tool under $10, and there were a lot of different useful items, many unfamiliar to at least some of us!  Karen McClain announced September’s swap is fabric postcards or notecards, and there are several tutorials online.

SHOW AND TELL:

Nelda Copsey:  Frog wall hanging made from bee blocks at Kathleen Culver’s Paper Dolls retreat, in 2015.  Very fun!

Linda Delaplain:  “Moose and the Cabin” quilt made for her son and his new wife, for their cabin at Crescent.  It was made from a Keepsake Quilting kit, with the addition of the cabin, in 2015.

Kelly Duke:  “Flowerpots” quilt from the pattern by Kim McLean.  Pieced and hand-quilted by herself in 2015.  Lots of bright colors!  

Pat Johnston:  “Jack’s Quilt”, a wall quilt of kites and pinwheels designed, pieced and quilted by herself for her grandson several years ago.  Very cute!

Anne Robertson:  “Castles on the Horizon” quilt top made as a wedding present for her niece.  Pattern is by Michele Kuhnsfrom Moda Bakeshop, pieced by herself (and to be finished) in 2015. 

Denise Nash:  Denim picnic quilt, made from discarded jeans and a colored denim piece found at a Coburg Quilt Show vendor, designed to practice long arm quilting on denim.  Designed, pieced, and quilted by herself in 2015.

​“The Sound of Snow Falling” wall quilt, pieced in a round robin with Judy Mason and Cathie Hurley, hand-quilted with metallic thread in 2015.  She is not a fan of metallic thread for hand quilting!

​“Koi Pond” made from the “City Lake” pattern in Cherri House’s book, Urban Views, with the addition of goldfish.  Pieced by herself, quilted by her husband, Tom Nash, and she added thread-painted dragonflies darting over the water, in 2015.

 

 

 

August's Meeting: Picnic in the Park

Hi all-

Our next meeting will be our annual picnic at Friendly Park at 27th and Monroe. It will be a potluck so bring a favorite dish to share, family members or guests, and lawn chairs. We will still do our usual Show and Tell, Bee Blocks, and the Swap (this month is a $10 or less notion swap,)

August 2015 Board Meeting Minutes

EUGENE MODERN QUILT GUILD

August 2, 2015

Present: Madyson John, Pat Johnston, Daisy Schrock, Anne Robertson, Nelda Copsey

1. Elections for next year’s officers are coming up on October 14. The 2015 officers will help the 2016 officers get started. Current positions up for election: President, Secretary. Discussion was held about re-organizing some of the positions to more evenly distribute the workload. It is recommended to combine the Swap and Bee Block positions into one, add a Vice President position, and delete the Presenter position. The Vice President position would be to assist the President and step in when the President is unavailable for meetings, not to be the President- elect for the next year. The President or Vice-President will lead the meetings, rather than a Presenter. These are changes to the by-laws and they will be voted on at a meeting. The election and available positions will be discussed at the August meeting and, at the September meeting, members will announce their nominations.

2. Communications have continued to be a problem this year, and members have complained to board members. During meetings, talking in the back of the room is making it very hard for others to hear. Daisy is willing to learn how to do the blog to help improve general communications. Another suggestion was to provide paper copies of a membership email/phone list, perhaps asking members for permission first, to make it easier to contact other members. Daisy also suggested holding a brief training session during a meeting break (e.g. in the kitchen) with a few members at a time showing a Power Point tutorial of how to access the EMQG group on the Modern Quilt Guild web site. The Swap list on the blog needs to be up-to-date if changes are made and it was suggested to have paper lists available at the meetings. The blog should have a current list of upcoming quilting events (not just EMQG events), quilt show entry application information, and volunteer opportunities.

3. Treasurer’s Report needs to be given at the meetings and be kept current on the MQG group web site.

4. Retreat – Pat went to the retreat center a week ago and talked to Tina. She is sending out an email to all those who are registered for the retreat with the details. Daisy will be working out the menus with the retreat center.

5. Program suggestions for meetings were given to Pat and included the owner of Eugene Textile Center and demonstrations of tools/notions by local quilt shops. Also the suggestion of a field trip to the Eugene Textile Center to use the facilities for member demonstrations/classes of hand-dying or stamping fabrics – they charge a very reasonable fee which would be shared by those attending.

6. Nelda asked for a good definition of “modern quilt” for the Lane County Fair textile division. She was directed to MQG site and the EMQG blog.

7. Picnic for the August meeting will again be held at Friendly Park. Madyson will send out a reminder email.

8. Since Madyson has changed employment, she may not be able to get to meetings/Sew Nights until 7 pm or so. She gave the key to McNail-Riley House to Pat for the August Sew Night.

9. Board Meeting scheduled for October 11 has been cancelled. The next board meeting will be a potluck in early November at Daisy’s house and will include 2015 and 2016 members. After the September meeting, Madyson will send an email to pick a date.

10. Raffle Quilt – The raffle will be held at the September meeting with tickets available at the August meeting. The donation quilt was also displayed at the Coburg booth and drew lots of interest. We will be donating it to Womenspace, and they may raffle it as a fundraiser.

11. Ideas for 2016 were suggested and included a mystery quilt/wall hanging class including a variety of techniques and purchasing a display rack for EMQG to display quilts during meetings and events. The Raffle and Donation quilts for 2016 need to be organized early in the year with a general member to lead each of them, not board members.

12. Coburg leftovers – Madyson will bring them to the August meeting and the donors can have their donations back. Anything leftover will be donated.

13. Donation to EMQG - Bonnie Glass, a member and the owner of Euphoria Chocolate, has donated a $50 Euphoria Chocolate gift card to the guild. We will raffle it at a couple of meetings this fall. Daisy suggested a Chocolate Challenge to make wall hangings based on chocolate and to be displayed at Euphoria.
