This was our annual picnic at Friendly Park and we enjoyed a lovely evening with good company and food.

Sew Night: Wednesday, August 19 at McNail-Riley House at 6:30 pm
Sew Day: Saturday, August 22 at Our Sewing Room from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm
“The Quilters”: a wonderful play about pioneer women and quilting is currently being performed by Cottage Grove Theatre.
ANNOUNCEMENTS:
Madyson announced that EMQG elections for 2016 are coming up soon. All positions are open for election to any member who wants to run. This year, our first entire year of being a full-fledged non-profit organization, we had 8 positions: President, Secretary, Treasurer, Presenter (shared by two members), Blogger/Web/Photographer, Programs, Swap, BeeBlocks. The board is proposing we consolidate down to 5 positions to spread the work more evenly. Those would be: President, Vice-President (to assist and cover for the President), Secretary/Web, Programs, Swap/Bee Blocks. The treasurer and some of the blogging and web duties would be covered by the President and Vice-President. There is a potential for positions to be shared by two people. Please give serious consideration to running for one of these positions, especially if you have not already held a position! All of the current position-holders will be helping the new people learn their roles after the elections, so there will be lots of help! If you have questions about the positions, contact Madyson or the board (current position-holders). Nominations will be held at next month’s meeting on September 9th with elections in October.
Coburg Quilt Show: Madyson announced that we made $157 on our booth after expenses (vendor fee) and that any leftover items will be donated.
Madyson also gave a brief treasury report: we have $5250 in the bank, but most of that is for the September retreat. We still need to pay the remaining balance for the retreat which is approximately $4000.
Missy Downey mentioned she had been to some good quilt shops this summer in Marysville and Tumwater, WA. Also, Linda Delaplain recommended the quilt shop in LaPine, OR.
PERMISSION TO PLAY:
This month was skipped, but Pat Johnston drew a theme for September: “Edges”. Pat also said that the Permission to Play(12” by 12”) pieces were displayed at the winery meetup with the Corvallis Modern Quilt Guild in July and were well received. She is returning the pieces to their owners at this meeting and future meetings, so please pick yours up from her.
PROGRAM:
Since this meeting was the picnic, there was not a program. Pat announced some upcoming ideas for meeting programs: The new Piece By Piece owner may be speaking about new quilting trends after Fall Quilt Market, a demonstration of the blog and web site using multiple laptop or tablet computers, Jessica Beaudet and perhaps others speaking on publishing patterns in magazines.
BEE:
Nelda Copsey used a handy tree trunk to display the Bee Blocks for August, which were for Kim Olsen and reflected the theme of “Water”. Various-sized blocks in blues and greens with lots of curvy strips were fun to see. Next month’s Bee Blocks are for Jennifer Fogerty-Gibson and are 18” chevron blocks made from 5” squares.
SWAP:
The swap for August was a favorite notion or tool under $10, and there were a lot of different useful items, many unfamiliar to at least some of us! Karen McClain announced September’s swap is fabric postcards or notecards, and there are several tutorials online.
SHOW AND TELL:
Nelda Copsey: Frog wall hanging made from bee blocks at Kathleen Culver’s Paper Dolls retreat, in 2015. Very fun!
Linda Delaplain: “Moose and the Cabin” quilt made for her son and his new wife, for their cabin at Crescent. It was made from a Keepsake Quilting kit, with the addition of the cabin, in 2015.
Kelly Duke: “Flowerpots” quilt from the pattern by Kim McLean. Pieced and hand-quilted by herself in 2015. Lots of bright colors!
Pat Johnston: “Jack’s Quilt”, a wall quilt of kites and pinwheels designed, pieced and quilted by herself for her grandson several years ago. Very cute!
Doll chair rescued from Goodwill for $5 and re-covered with selvages – adorable!
Wonky rainbow star quilt made from her EMQG bee blocks, quilted by Jayne Scoggin.
Anne Robertson: “Castles on the Horizon” quilt top made as a wedding present for her niece. Pattern is by Michele Kuhnsfrom Moda Bakeshop, pieced by herself (and to be finished) in 2015.
Denise Nash: Denim picnic quilt, made from discarded jeans and a colored denim piece found at a Coburg Quilt Show vendor, designed to practice long arm quilting on denim. Designed, pieced, and quilted by herself in 2015.
“The Sound of Snow Falling” wall quilt, pieced in a round robin with Judy Mason and Cathie Hurley, hand-quilted with metallic thread in 2015. She is not a fan of metallic thread for hand quilting!
“Koi Pond” made from the “City Lake” pattern in Cherri House’s book, Urban Views, with the addition of goldfish. Pieced by herself, quilted by her husband, Tom Nash, and she added thread-painted dragonflies darting over the water, in 2015.
