Donation Quilt Update
Our donation quilt was displayed at the Willamette Valley Quilt Festival in Albany last month. Over a hundred raffle tickets for the quilt were sold at the show, and ticket sales seemed lively at the EMQG meeting. There will be one last chance to buy tickets at the beginning of the March meeting, just before we have the drawing for the winner! All proceeds will be donated to Ophelia’s Place.
Call for Volunteers
Ken would love one or two volunteers to help set up the meetings. This would involve arriving just a little earlier to help set up tables, the quilt stand, and hang quilts with Janice. Please talk to Ken if you are available to help.
Solids Challenge
Any completed ‘Solids Challenge’ quilts are due at the April meeting. These can be any quilted project you’d like – any size, shape, function. The only guideline is to use ONLY solids. We can’t wait to see what you make!
FQ Challenge
There were three entries in this month's FQ Challenge.
- Hillie – finished the binding on her skill building quilt
- Janice – finished her orange drunkards path quilt
- Bonnie – finished the color wheel block for her Gypsy Wife quilt
Next month, there are 5 entries:
- Ann – finish star blocks for Christmas
- Jill – 36+ blocks for solids challenge
- Hillie – finish Japanese ladies top
- Bonnie – finish sampler circle block
- Elizabeth – finish top of runner
Migrating Geese Skill Builder
Last year Ken shared a technique for Migrating Flying Geese (block on the right) using a technique sheet by Deb Tucker (Tucker gives credit to a book by Georgia Bonsteel). Ken is going to order some of these technique sheets – please contact him asap if you’d like one. They are $9.50, and you can reimburse Ken at the March meeting. Contact Ken no later than February 20, 2020 through the EMQG email address if you’d like one (eugenemqg@gmail.com).
This year, Ken showed us how to make the same block using strips (block on the left). Instructions for the strip method will be emailed to all guild members.
Ken recommends using plenty of starch for either method!!
Trunk Show - Nela Barrow
Nela started quilting in 2013. Nela discussed her love of color and challenging projects. She likes to try new things, and rarely repeats a pattern.
1.) Star Surround Quilt-Along
Nela found the 'Star Surround Quilt-Along' at the blog 'Happy Quilting' by Melissa Corry. This quilt is from the first quilt-along Nela joined. One of Nela's first loves in the quilting world was Jeni Baker, so she used a Jeni Baker line of fabric (Nordika). Nela has done a few of these sew alongs, but this is her first lap sized quilt, made in July 2013. Quilted by Nela.

In September 2013, Nela flew to Utah to attend the Sewing Summit. During this trip, she went to Pine Needles and bought this kit by Sandra Workman. She made 2 - one for her daughter, and for her daughter’s best friend. Nela quilted it, and it is machine bound.

3.) Meadow Quilt
This Lizzy House pattern is one that is only offered if you attend the class. Nela loved choosing the colors, and branched out to find colors and fabrics using a variety of designers and collections. This was quilted by Denise Nash, and was the first quilt Nela sent to another quilter.

4.) Clammy Quilt
This Latifah Saafir pattern was another opportunity to play with color. This one uses a lot of Heather Ross fabrics in pinks and greens. Nela made it when she took a class with Latifah Saafir in Portland. It's quilted by Denise Shoup, and has Minky on the back.

5.) Cadence Court Quilt
This quilt was displayed at Quilt Festival in 2018. The pattern is 'Cadence Court' by Sassafras Lane Designs. It was paper pieced using fabrics from all 3 colors ways of the 'De la Luna' fabric line by Tula Pink, and quilted by Adam Rateliff.

A Gift for Nela
Ken and Bonnie presented this gift to Nela as a small token of our appreciation for leading the guild for the last two years. It’s filled with yummy local items, including wine, cider, cloth napkins made by Missy and Linda, and chocolate. Thank you so much, Nela!!
2020 Sampler Circle Challenge:
The challenge for next month to make one of each of the following:
- a 16” Flying Geese in a Pinwheel
- a 6”x18” Migrating Geese panel
Ken passed out instructions at the meeting, and will email instructions to all guild members. We can't wait to see what you all do for next month!
Sampler Circle Show and Tell
At least sixteen members are participating in the challenge, and fourteen guild members brought their completed Expanding Star blocks this month. It’s so exciting to see the variety, and to see how different the block looks using different fabrics!
Show and Tell:
Pat made this quilt using a jelly roll. It was quilted by Jane Scoggins.
Diane is attending QuiltCon this year, and made this as part of the QuiltCon mini-quilt swap. She calls it ‘The Creative Mind.’ It uses a variety of techniques, and many of these techniques are something that Diane tried for the first time on this quilt.
Jackie finished the embroidery for this red and white quilt in 2004. She started piecing in 2006, and decided last weekend that it was time to finish!!
Daisy belongs to a sketching group that meets once a week. The group went on a sketching tour of Italy earlier this year. Daisy sketched each day on to prepared fabric. Each 10” block represents one day of the trip. The black ink are archival, acid free, waterproof Pitt Pens, and the colors are Derwent Inktense Pencils. Inktense pencils are set with a textile medium that helps the inks adhere to the fabric, followed by a heat set with an iron. It was illustrated, pieced, and quilted by Daisy.
Bonnie’s 1st grader asked her to share the quilt he made as part of a class project. The illustration is of a video game character named Kirby.
Nela finished her Granny Cabin by Then Came June. Nela added an additional row at the bottom. Quilted by Denise Shoup.
