April 2018 Eugene MQG Meeting
There was one guest and one new member who joined this month. We had a lot of "quilt magic" to look at this evening. Fun, Fun, Fun!
Announcements:
Our Eugene MQG banner is completed! Thanks to Linda, Pat and Janice, the new banner for our guild was shown and it is great!! Nice work ladies!!
June 9 Sew Day 10am-4pm
Sew day will be held at the Eugene Garden Club (our regular meeting spot). It will be $10 for the day. Bring your machines, surge protectors, extension cords and accessories and have a fun day with your guild members and/or others. Check with Nela about the need for irons and ironing boards.
Nela volunteered to provide a demonstration on sewing in zippers so bring some zippers with you if you want to participate and learn/refine these skills.
June 30 Corvallis Meet-up (time to be announced closer to the date)
The Eugene MQG and the Corvallis MQG will join together for a social event again this year. We will meet at Sweet Earth Vineyards in Monroe. There is a covered pavilion with an accessible bathroom, a wine tasting room with air conditioning (in years past this has been mighty nice, both the wine and the AC). We have decided to have a swap of either a table runner or place mats, which is optional to participate in. Also, we will have a light potluck; plan to bring something to share and please bring your own plate and silverware. There are chairs and benches available on site but you may want to bring a lawn chair as well to ensure a place to sit.

Sorrel provided information about a woman who is requesting 6 1/2" unfinished blocks of the cat block pattern by Elizabeth Hartman. She is making a quilt for each of her deceased daughter's classmates and hopes to have them completed before the end of the school year....June!!! Please look on Instragram @christypugh for the story, and you can find the pattern at Janome.com (cat block pillow). Sorrel has offered to collect the blocks at the May meeting and mail them all together.
Donation 2018 quilt:
Kim finished sewing together the blocks in the layout chosen by members of the guild. All that is left is the quilting and binding. Jill has offered to provide the batting and Pat has provided the backing fabric. We are still looking for someone(s) to finish the quilting and binding.
Presentation:
Mystery with Letters
Kim offered a project for those who are interested. She referenced the Portland MQG site for a Word Quilt Challenge. Also check out http://lellaboutique.blogspot.com/2016/06/when-life-is-scrappy-make-quilt.html to find the patterns for letters posted by Moda.
See Kim's information posted below:
For this mystery:
This is a study in looking at contrasts and color value, to distinguish between Darks and Medium/Lights. Some letters will be dark to make words that will be dark in value and others light or medium. This works best if the background is light!
There will be 20 letters in total. A collection of 5 will be introduced each month. Some light/medium and some dark.
The first month, which was not presented well, had 3 light/medium letter 'E' s, and one dark 'E' and one dark 'K'.
This will make a lap sized quilt, if you make the Moda 8" by 10" size letters.
One may want to add some favorite pieced blocks to fill in as well. Otherwise, the negative space areas will be available for your beautiful free motion quilting! :-)

UFO FQ Challenge:
We had 4 people complete the challenge this month. Kelly was the winner chosen for the fat quarter blocks submitted! 10 participants joined for this next months challenge! Keep on finishing those projects!!!
Traveling Quilt Bee:
They are growing!!! Fun to see all of the creative additions! Nice work everyone!!
