Eugene Modern Quilt Guild Meeting Notes [Jan.13, 2016]

·         The meeting was called to order by Kelly Duke who emphasized the aims for 2016; communication and socialization.   To illustrate those aims, Daisy Schrock led us in a rousing name game complete with gestures.

·         Bonnie Glass announced the requirements and needs for Euphoria Chocolates' spot in the 2/5 Art Walk.  She is looking for four or five Modern Quilts of various sizes to be displayed in a window and possible a table and for the quilters to be present for explanations as the last spot on the tour.

·         Next Wed. Sew Night will concentrate on the Bags of Love Butterfly quilts for charity.

·         The Pioneer Museum Quilt show will be held in April.  Jenny Bonynge will bring entry forms to the Feb. meeting.

·         Nela Barrow and Kim Olsen presented the EMQG Skill Building BOM: Half Square Triangles (HSTs) and Quarter Square Triangles (QSTs) complete with samples, handouts, diagrams and tutorial websites. This block will be used in a guild donation quilt. If you would like to participate, bring a block to Feb. meeting.

·         The Swap for Feb. meeting is a pillow, no larger than 12”.

·         Permission 2 Play for Feb. is “Variation”

·         Show and Tell Participants:

o   Pat Johnston & Jayne Scoggin displayed “Lily’s Quilt”

o   Linda Delaplain showed both a quilt and a table runner.

o   Jackie Gates shared a wall hanging “Blocking About Town”

o   Carol Prud’homme shared a wall hanging of her own design with a request for help

o   Shawna Haynes chose to show her “Firefly Quilt”

o   Phyliss Porter shared a wall hanging of a large block and panels

o   Daisy Schrock displayed a large wall hanging titled “O Birther” complete with embroidered hieroglyphics.

o    Denise Nash titled her wall hanging “Korbin in Plaid”

·         Pat Johnston announced that she is working on a possible four-day/3-night quilting Get-A-Way in October at the Big K Guest Ranch in Elkton, OR.   She would like to know if you might be interested. This event might be made available to members of the Corvallis Modern Quilt Guild.

More information will be forthcoming as interest is expressed.

January Skill Building Block

Half Square Triangles (HSTs) and Quarter Square Triangles (QSTs)

Presenters: Kim Olsen & Nela Barrow

Objectives: Learn different methods to make HSTs

Learn how to make QSTs
Learn tricks to make them look good!

Members are encouraged to experiment with different ways to make these squares. Perhaps you'll be inspired to make a quilt using one of them!

The EMQG will be collecting blocks to make donation quilts. If you'd like to participate in this effort, please make a 16-1/2" block (16" finished), using low volume creams and/or whites and royal/navy blue and bring it to the February 10th meeting. See the diagram below for the setting that Kim and Nela have chosen for our first donation block.

Tips for making HSTs

Jan 20th Sew Night

We'll be making butterfly blankets for Bags of Love from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Mcnail-Riley House, 601 W 13th Ave, Eugene. These little blankets are used with infants and work well as a cover in car seats.  Bags of Love are providing us with 20 kits. Bring your sewing machine, a neutral thread, and a walking foot if you have one.

A master pattern will be available if you'd like to trace a copy for yourself.

Euphoria art walk

The new downtown location of Euphoria Chocolates (946 Willamette St.) will be the last stop on the February Art Walk in Eugene. Bonnie Glass, the owner and a member of our guild, has asked that we showcase Modern Quilting.

We need 4-5 modern quilts to display. These quilts can be from 24" to 66" wide and up to 70" long. They will be on display in the windows of the store for the month of February. Quilts should have a hanging sleeve and rod and a label with the title and contact information so we can return the quilts to their proper owners.

If you have a modern quilt that you think would work for this show, please bring it to the January meeting for consideration or contact Daisy for more information.

We'll be having our regular monthly meeting on Wednesday, Jan. 13th, from 6:31-8:30 pm. Another group is using the building until 6:30, so please do not enter the building until after 6:30.

Come meet your fellow quilters, learn about the Skill Building Blocks program, this year's swap, and many other exciting events the Guild has planned for the year. There will be show-and-tell!

On our Jan. 20th Sew Night, from 6:30-8, we will be making butterfly blankets for Bags of Love. They are providing 20 kits. Bring your sewing machines and help bring some comfort into a child's life. We will have a master pattern if you want to trace a copy for your own use.

**ANNOUNCEMENT**

Important Announcement:  Beginning with the next meeting - January 13, 2016 - the McNail-Riley House will have another group which is meeting right before the EMQG.  They have the house scheduled until 6:30PM, so please do not go inside until after 6:31PM. We are fairly speedy at getting chairs set up, so it should work out fine. Thanks for your cooperation!

UPCOMING EVENTS:

Art Quilt Show at the Emerald Art Center, 500 Main Street in Springfield, running until December 24th.  Daisy Schrock says the quilting is phenomenal and is a wonderful show.  It is also part of the December Second Friday Art Walk.

Rob Appel Reverse Applique Class will be held at Paramount Sewing and Vacuum on April 30th, Linda Delaplain announced.  It is an all-day class for $99.  See the Paramount web site for information.

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

2016 Sampler Quilt:  Nela Barrow and Kim Olsen are kicking off the new EMQG program to teach and learn skills and techniques.  The January skill will be HST’s (Half Square Triangles).  They will be making up a 2016 calendar at the January meeting for signups to teach skills and ideas are welcome!

Lucky Spool Club:  Nela also announced there is a MQG challenge group which involves 12 skills over a year.  The cost for this challenge is $45 with the MQG discount and Nela will send out the link.

MQG Riley Blake Challenge: Linda and Madyson announced that the MQG is sending informational emails and signups will begin December 19th for the next Riley Blake Challenge.  This time they will be sending the fabric to the guilds instead of individuals, in order to manage it better.  Information is also on the Modern Quilt Guild web site.

Euphoria Chocolate:  Bonnie Glass, co-owner of Euphoria Chocolate and EMQG member, announced they have opened a new store at 945 Willamette in Eugene.  They are sponsoring the February First Friday Art Walk and she wants to hang 5 or 6 modern quilts in the windows to showcase the EMQG.  This is your opportunity to show off your modern creativity!  Email Bonnie at  bonnie@euphoriachocolate.com  for information.  Jenn Fogarty-Gibson and Daisy will work with Bonnie to organize this event and will send out an email with quilt dimensions.  There is limited display space, so bring your quilts to the January EMQG meeting for Bonnie to choose.  The quilters will need to be there for the First Friday Art Walk in order to answer questions from the public.

Bonnie also brought Euphoria truffles to our holiday dessert potluck – a delicious treat!

BEE:  Madyson was the queen bee for November and received her “Hashtag” blocks which are giving her a big head start on a friend’s birthday present.  Kathy Alexander has December’s bee and passed out Halloween fabrics to add to her October blocks from last year.  Nelda Copley has enjoyed leading the Bee for the last two years.  Jayne Scoggin and Phyliss Porter are taking over the Bee for 2016 and they presented the sign-up calendar.  By meeting’s end, they had it all filled in!

PERMISSION TO PLAY:  Pat Johnston presented one more piece for the November theme of “Past”, which used family photos printed on fabric.  Lovely effect!  The December theme is “Flatten” and they were some fun interpretations with flattened flowers and fabric pleats.  The theme for January is “Envy” – come up with some inspiration for your 12” by 12” art piece!

Julie Johnson – A selection of recent projects: decorative fabric houses, coasters made from hexies, handbags made with scraps, strip-piecing, and thread painting, a market bag mad from a rice bag, and a special bag to remember the recent Paris tragedy.  Julie has been very busy!

Karen McClain – a nap quilt made for (and with the help of) her two-year-old granddaughter.

SWAP:  Christmas gift bags, a garland, and a stocking were swapped - very fun!  Karen McClain is handing over the swap for 2016 to Jayne and Phyliss, and they announced the January Swap will be a 18” by 18” Table Topper.

PROGRAM:  We had lots of fun activities at this holiday meeting!  A delicious dessert potluck was set up with LOTS of goodies!  The Raffles were held:  B.J. Titus won the modern quilt (the turquoise and gray one made by many EMQG members) 

and Kelly Duke won the $25 Euphoria Chocolate gift card donated by Bonnie.  The “traditional” dice game of “Left Right Center” involving the trading of 6” fabric squares was held with much enthusiastic (and loud) participation!  Madyson solicited donations from Aurifil Thread, Jean Marie Fabrics and The Cloth Pocket and so we had drawings for thread, fabric, and other goodies!  Everyone went home with something!  

A great time was had by all!  And thanks to Madyson for all her enthusiasm and hard work this year!!
