Welcome to the Eugene Modern Quilt Guild!

The Eugene Modern Quilt Guild (EMQG) is a group of about 40 modern quilters in the mid-Willamette Valley. We're a chapter of the Modern Quilt Guild, We have monthly meetings with education and show & tell, "Slow Stitch Days," Sew Days, and an annual retreat. We welcome new members! Our First Sew Day of 2024

We gathered for our first Sew Day of the year in February. It was a great opportunity as always to learn from each other, get a second opinion or two, and get caught up on all things life and quilting. There are three more Sew Days in 2024.

Ugly Fabric Challenge Quilts, Calendar Challenge Quilts and Show & Tell

Ugly Fabric Challenge Each member that wanted to participate in the "Ugly Fabric" Challenge received the fabric and could use it in any type of project they wanted. The “ugly” fabric was a green and orange cheetah print by Kaffe Fassett. Participants made such a variety of projects! Ken – Table runner - pattern is “Coconut Chips” by Madison Cottage Diane – Starburst wall hanging Pat – Leaves Nela – Norm the Gnome wall hanging Denise – Mask Susan C – Trees wall hanging Hilly – Giraffe wall hanging Linda Jo – Hot pad Anne – Stars quilt camouflaged with other bright colors Glenna – Paper pieced mushrooms Jackie – A table runner that she gave to son at Thanksgiving because he loves the “ugly” fabric Also participating in the challenge were: Jill McKenny – Was inspired by the Day of the Dead Kim – “If it’s so ugly you haven’t cut it small enough” Used her piece on a quilt Kelly – Used fabric in two quilt project blocks Rush – Made a round tortilla warmer Jenny – Made three blocks

Defining Modern Quilting: Minimalism/Negative Space

In modern quilting, minimalism and negative space often go hand in hand, although either can be present without the other. Minimalism quilts have simple content and simple form which provide for maximum visual impact. Negative space is the unoccupied area that surrounds the objects, shapes, or forms in a composition. It can be within a block itself as well as the space surrounding the block. It flows in, around, and between the quilt blocks. In addition to defining shapes in a quilt, negative space can be used to create movement, emphasis, and interest in a quilt design. Members explored minimalism and shared their mini-quilts.

Defining Modern Quilting: Improv

Continuing our exploration of different styles of modern quilting, we made improv mini-quilts! Improvisational piecing is a design element of modern quilting that is just what it sounds like: sewing together fabric without always measuring and cutting to precise measurements. The freedom of piecing like this appeals to many modern quilters as it keeps the design process of quilting continuing through the labor of piecing. There are no mistakes to be made in improve piecing – if you like the way it looks, it works. This may sound daunting in that there is no pattern to work with, but often improve piecing is done within a context or structure.
